Patrick Zimmerli, "Aspects of Darkness and Light" (2014)

Aspects of Darkness and Light is a work for Saxophone, Bass, Percussion and String Quartet.  Composed by Patrick Zimmerli, it was premiered at Wigmore Hall in London on April 14, 2014 with Joshua Redman, Tenor Sax, Scott Pelly, Bass Satoshi Takeishi, Percussion and The Escher Quartet.  The piece was presented as part of a Joshua Redman-curated jazz series at Wigmore.

The many sections can form a whole or part of a program. Mike Hobart wrote in his review in the Financial Times that each of the sections "represented different manifestations of light, the moods encapsulated by such titles as “Starbursts and Heroes” – an abstract ballad followed by rousing triple-time strings – “Sun on Sand” and “Through Mist”.

A recording of Aspects was released by Joshua Redmond & Brooklyn Rider in 2019 under the title “Sun on Sand.” The London Jazz News review called it “a warm-sounding and fantastically rich album” and an “ideal mix of jazz and modern classical music that gets under the skin the whole way through.” It is available on Amazon and Spotify.
